CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY - MASTER'S OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Learning the best process for designing products
The Master’s of Product Development is a joint program between the schools of Design, Engineering, and Business. The program focuses on giving students a cross-disciplinary view of product development including classes in integrated product development, industrial design, user research, and entrepreneurship. During this program, I participated in several extensive product development projects sponsored by companies including Procter and Gamble, GlaxoSmithKline, and start-ups in the Pittsburgh area. Using an interdisciplinary and dynamic process, I developed product solutions, starting from user research and initial brainstorming and growing into concept development and refinement.
SKILLS USED: brainstorming | concept development | user research | branding & design strategy | manufacturing analysis
In my master's program, we learned an integrated method of product development. This process can be applied no matter what type of product you are designing - from a website to a consumer product to a new business concept.
We learned how to quickly communicate ideas for products or services using sketching and ideation
For our capstone project we were put on a team of designers, engineers and business students to develop a product from scratch.
My team was sponsored by Proctor & Gamble and given the task of creating a new innovative product in the air care space.
As we moved through the product development process, my training in product development allowed me to manage the rest of the team, coordinating everything from the user research to the development of the final models by the designers and engineers on our team.
